NHRA FMDRS: US 13 Dragway Saturday Race Results

11 June 2000

BOOZ, ENGLISH MAKE THE MOST OF HOT U.S 13 DRAGWAY

DELMAR, Delaware -After a runner-up finish two weeks ago at Maple
Grove Raceway, Jeanie Booz of Blooming Glen, Pa. claimed the $1000 Winston
Top Qualifier award in Federal-Mogul Dragster for the second consecutive
year at U.S. 13 Dragway. In Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Craig English of
Mount Holly, N.J. came from nowhere to knock three-time defending
Federal-Mogul Funny Car National Champion, Frank Manzo of Morganville, N.J.
out of the No. 1 qualifying position.
Booz in her new 2000 Federal-Mogul Dragster made the best of a hot
and slippery U.S. 13 Dragway. Booz made her quickest run of the day in the
first qualifying attempt with a stellar pass of 5.878 seconds at 241.48
mph. Her second attempt was not a s good as the first but clinched the top
spot for tomorrow's eliminations when veteran racer Cliff Bozzelli of
Absecon, N.J. began to smoke his tires at half-track. Bozzelli qualified
second with a run of 5.908 seconds at 238.60.
English in his sophomore Federal-Mogul Funny Car season made the
only sub-five second pass off the day to collect the $1000 Winston Top
Qualifier Bonus. In his first qualifying attempt, English skated around
the track as if he was running on ice and could only muster a run of 8.533
seconds at 99.04 mph. His second attempt was took place side-by-side with
three-time defending champion and the current No. 1 qualifier, Manzo.
Manzo left first to only be caught and passed by a streaking English.
English made a run of 5.977 seconds at 241.80 mph to secure his first
No. 1 qualifying position in a Federal-Mogul Funny Car.
"On my second pass the car was like an arrow, said an ecstatic
English. "I left a little late but I could see I was gaining on Manzo, so
I know I had something special when I hit the [finish] line. I can't wait
to see what we can do tomorrow."
Also collecting Winston Top Qualifier bonus money were Frank Aragona of
Franklin Square, N.Y. in Competition, James Zane of Bordentown, N.J. in
Super Stock, and Jim Reid Jr. of Hanson, Mass. in Stock.
