CART Statement Regarding Relationship with Belle Isle

20 April 2000

CART Statement Regarding Relationship with Belle Isle
TROY, Mich., April 19 There have been several recent media
accounts regarding Championship Auto Racing Teams and its FedEx Championship
Series event on Belle Isle in Detroit. The following statement clarifies
questions on this matter and can be attributed to Andrew Craig, Chairman and
CEO of CART:
"CART has had a long and successful history here in Detroit. The Tenneco
Automotive Grand Prix of Detroit is one of the city's premier events, and it
is an important stop on the CART FedEx championship series.
"It is true that we will no longer race on Belle Isle following the 2001
racing season. Despite tremendous efforts by the City of Detroit to
accommodate our needs, we have simply outgrown Belle Isle as a venue.
"However, other facts that have been reported in the media recently are
simply not true. CART has never said that the proposed racetrack at the State
Fairgrounds is the only alternative location to Belle Isle. Additionally,
reports that we plan to move the event to a location in Minnesota are without
any substance.
"We have been in touch with Mayor Archer this week to express our desire
to work with the City of Detroit to find an alternative venue. We hope that
working with the city and race promoter IMG, we may be able to find a venue
that will better meet the needs of CART, its drivers and the many race fans
here in Southeast Michigan."
