DAN GURNEY NAMED WINNER OF FIRST SHAV GLICK AWARD Carlsbad, Calif. -- Motor racing legend Dan Gurney has been chosen the winner of the first annual Shav Glick Award, given for distinguished achievement in motor racing by a Californian. The award, established by car care products company Eagle One, honors the venerable motorsports editor of the Los Angeles Times. Gurney will receive the award at the NASCAR Winston Cup NAPA Auto Parts 500, April 30, at California Speedway. A resident of Newport Beach, Calif., Gurney has enjoyed a distinguished racing career on an international scale, as a driver, car builder, owner and team manager. He was the first driver ever to win races in the four major categories of motorsports: Formula One, NASCAR, Indy Car and Sports Car. He was also the first American driver to win a Grand Prix in his own car. In the Indy 500, Gurney finished second twice and third once. As a car builder, his Eagle was driven to victory in 1975 by Bobby Unser. Later, his GTP Toyota Eagles won 17 consecutive IMSA races in 1992 and 1993. He was also one of the founders of the Long Beach Grand Prix. Nominees for the award also included Rick Mears, four-time Indy 500 winner; Wally Parks, founder of the NHRA; Kenny Roberts, world champion motorcycle rider; and the late owner/racing promoter J.C. Agajanian.
