Wilkings Will Relocate to Georgia to Become Executive VP of Rebco Racing EnterprisesIRWINDALE, Calif. -- It was announced today that, effective October 1, 1999 Ray Wilkings will step down as Irwindale Speedway's Vice President/Chief Operating Officer. He leaves to take the position of Executive Vice President of Rebco Racing Enterprises, one of the nation's leading suppliers of specialized racing equipment. Irwindale's Director of Operations Robert DeFazio has been named Speedway General Manager. Wilkings, who has been an investor/partner in Rebco Racing Enterprises for a number of years, made the decision to join the Atlanta area company when the untimely death of Mark Woods left the company's management team low on expert supervision. "They called and said that they really needed me," said Wilkings. "This is going to be a tremendous challenge for me personally and for my whole family, but it's one that we have decided to take." Rebco is located in Cumming, Georgia just north of Atlanta. DeFazio's first official act as GM was to designate October 2ND as "Ray Wilkings Night at Irwindale Speedway". "We want to give all the fans, track employees, and competitors a chance to say goodbye to Ray and (his wife) Darlene, they mean a great deal to a lot of people here at Irwindale," he explained. Associated with the project since January of 1998, DeFazio came onboard as the project's Construction Manager, when the construction was completed in February of 1999, he stayed on to become the track's day-to-day Operations Manager. "I'm looking at trying to fill one giant pair of shoes," he said. "Ray Wilkings is a true legend among short track promoters . His influence on this track and on the national racing scene in general, has been a very solid one." Speaking on behalf of the Speedway's Board of Directors, President / CEO Jim Williams praised Wilkings and his many contributions to the Irwindale Speedway project. "For all intents and purposes Ray Wilkings has been Irwindale Speedway. His work ethic, his leadership, and his dedication to this facility have been something that is admired not only here but nationwide. We are much indebted to this man and wish him all the best in his new position at Rebco." Wilkings, who is credited with being one of the original creators of the Irwindale Speedway concept is, and will remain, a member of the Limited Liability Corporation which owns the Speedway. "It will be impossible for me to not be vitally interested in Irwindale, it'll always be an important part of my life." Wilkings will be "on call" as a consultant ("...As close as the telephone, anytime") to ensure the track's continuing success. "This has been a very difficult decision for me, I'm very proud of what we accomplished at Irwindale, I'll miss this place very much," Wilkings added.
