Robbie Rice will be seventh member of 'Simpson Super Seven'

15 September 1999

INDIANAPOLIS, Ind. (September 15) - In a drawing witnessed by a nationwide
television audience, the name of Robbie Rice was selected to be the seventh
member of the unique "Simpson Super Seven" program for the Arby's Season
Finale at Indianapolis Raceway Park on Saturday, Sept, 18.

Through the program, an eligible driver who wins both the midget and sprint
car features in the doubleheader will earn a $50,000 bonus. The first six
qualifying spots went to the highest placing finisher using Simpson Race
Equipment in each of IRP's six previous USAC open wheel race events.

During the ESPN2 telecast of the Hut Hundred at Terre Haute on Wednesday,
Sept. 1, Rice's name was drawn by Brian Robson of Simpson Race Products.

Rice, the son of ESPN commentator Larry Rice, a former USAC Silver Bullet
and Midget champion, has been competing in the Silver Bullet and sprint car
series only. IRP officials have been assured that he intends to have a
competitive midget ride prior to the Arby's Season Finale in order to be in
a position to race for the $50,000 bonus.

He joins Ryan Newman, Tracy Hines, Eric Gordon, Dave Steele, Dave Darland,
and Jason Leffler in the field for the Simpson Super Seven.

Newman was the first qualifier, winning the Coca-Cola 100 for the USAC Coors
Light Silver Bullet Racing Series on Saturday, May 22. He won again the
following week, taking the Budweiser Night Before the 500. Hines, who was
second to Newman the previous week, was in the same spot again and thus
qualified for the Simpson Super Seven.

When Hines won the Kendall GT-1 Sprint Classic for the Stoops Freightliner
USAC Sprint Cars on Saturday, June 12, Eric Gordon was second and earned the
third spot.

Steele picked up the fourth position with his win on Wednesday, August 4 in
the DuPont 100 for the Silver Bullet series.

Darland ran fourth in the Turbines Sprint Classic on Wednesday, August 11
behind three other qualifiers - Steele, Newman, and Gordon, to earn the next
available qualifying position.

In the CVS Pharmacy Mel Kenyon Classic, Leffler placed second behind Newman
to get the sixth spot.
