CART: Gordon to fly with Eagle at Chicago, Fontana
16 August 1999
ANAHEIM, Calif. (Aug. 16, 1999) -- Team Gordon and All American Racers announced today that they have finalized negotiations for the purchase an Eagle 997 Champ car to be driven by Robby Gordon in the remaining 1999 CART FedEx Championship Series oval events at Chicago and Fontana. The car will be painted in the traditional Team Gordon colors and outfitted with Firestone Tires, and sport the signature Eagle graphics on the nose. "I've had the Eagle eye on that chassis for quite some time, now," said Gordon, who's first-year Johns Manville/Panasonic/Menards-sponsored team is competing at Mid-Ohio this weekend. "It seems to have what we need to move to the front of the grid on the ovals. I've known Dan (Gurney) for a long time, and he's had a history of building winning chassis. I've been wanting to put Toyota in Victory Circle all year. Now, I have another goal and that's to do it with an Eagle Champ car." "We are happy to be able to have a car ready for Robby by Chicago and it is great to see that he is so enthusiastic about racing an Eagle at Chicago and Fontana," Gurney said. "AAR has had a longstanding relationship with John Menard, who purchased Eagles for his early CART team in 1980 and1981, so it will be fun to see an Eagle in Menard trim once again. This is going to be fun."
