NHRA: Federal Mogul Rookie Sensation Rob Wendland is at the top of his field
15 August 1999
Scribner, Neb. - The newest sensation to hit Federal-Mogul Dragster could very well be the In-N-Out Burger race teams of Jerry Darien and Ken Meadows. The team as a collective has two excellent drivers who are making their mark on the 1999 NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing series. The first driver, Rob Wendlend,of Lawrence, Kan. is a rookie who has recently taken the seat of the blown alcohol dragster that once was driven by the second, Federal-Mogul Dragster teammate Melanie Troxel, of Denver, Colo. The blown alcohol dragster is one of two In-N-Out dragsters that are currently competing in the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series. The second of the cars is Troxel's A/Fuel, or injected-nitro dragster that she has run to a fifth place position in the NHRA Federal-Mogul points standings, and first place in the NHRA Northwest Division standings. "Rob's rookie season has been amazing," said Mike Troxel, who is Melanie's father, and Wendland's crew chief. "He is currently ranked ninth in the national points standings with a few national event wins already under his belt." This weekend's NHRA Federal-Mogul event, taking place at Nebraska Motorplex is another track at which Wendland is showing his skill. After three sessions of qualifying Wendland is number one on the qualifying ladder and takes the honor of Wintson Top Qualifier for the Federal-Mogul Dragster category. If Wendland's winning continues he may join his teammate, Melanie Troxel, in the top part of the points ladder, an enviable place for any driver, but especially when both those drivers, who share two spots in the top five, are teammates. Other Winston Top Qualifiers of the weekend included Sioux City, Iowa's Cy Chesterman in Federal-Mogul Funny Car, Tonkawa, Oklahoma's John Linton in Comp Eliminator, Shorter, Alabama's Bobby Dennis in Super Stock, and local racer, Fremont, Nebraska's Stewart Triggs in Stock Eliminator. Eliminations will begin at 8 a.m. Sunday morning with Federal-Mogul Dragster and Funny Car making their first elimination run at 1 p.m. The following are the final qualifying results and Sunday's elimination pairings for Federal-Mogul Dragster and Funny Car, from the NHRA Federal-Mogul Drag Racing Series event at Nebraska Motorplex, the fifth of six events in the NHRA West Central Division: FEDERAL-MOGUL DRAGSTER 1.
