TRACKS: Tremont Wins 10th of Season, Marcus Wins Sportsman at Lebanon Valley

18 July 1999

WEST LEBANON, NY- Kenny Tremont returned to victory lane after a two week
absence. George Marcus took top honors in the 20-lap sportsman feature.
Robbie Speed was the winner in the 20-lap street stock main. Donnie Denue won
the 15-lap IMCA modified feature. Rifenburg Construction was the night's main
sponsor and provided a lot of entertainment for the fans.

Caution-plagued would be the nicest way to describe the 30-lap
modified feature. Several multi-car incidents took out many of the
competitors. Kenny Tremont had to start 25th on the grid after qualifying
through the consi, he was up to 14th by lap four. When the race resumed Ron
Blake was in front of the field. Todd Wilkinson and Tremont were steadily
working their way through the field; they sat fifth and sixth on lap eight.
Tremont got by Wilkinson and Rich Ricci to take over fourth by lap ten.
A great three-way battle for eleventh between J.R. Heffner, Dickie Larkin and
Donnie Corellis was shaping up on lap 11. Larkin would spin and be done for
the night. John Hewitt would also pull into the pits under the lap 12 yellow
as well.

Tremont took over the second spot on the restart and set his sights
on Blake. Tremont made the pass for the lead on lap 16. Eddie Marshall took
sixth from Guy Sheldon on lap 16. Two cautions flew on lap 17, the second of
which finished off some of the top runners. Rich Ricci was one of the fastest
cars on the track in the final stages of the race; he went from fifth to
third in the last ten laps of the feature. Heffner also continued his string
of top finishes coming fourth.

Tremont crossed the line first for the tenth time this season and his
76th of his career. Blake had a great run in the second spot and Ricci came
home third.

Second year driver, Frank Harper ran a very strong race in the 20-lap
sportsman feature. He led the first 14 laps of the event before giving it up
to George Marcus. Harper was able to hold onto the runner-up position for the
second time this season. Dave Sanchez was third in the running order at the
finish. Art Collins continued his string of top ten performances with a
fourth place finish. Pete Visconti brought home his racecar in the fifth
position. The sportsman ran a much better race than their modified
counterparts, as there was only one caution in the race.

Bob Miller was the early race leader in the 20-lap street stock main. Robbie
Speed was hungry, still looking for his first win of the 1999 season, he
moved into the second position on lap three. Some great three wide action
down the backstretch in the early portion of the race back in the pack. The
first caution of the race flew on lap five when Danny Sanchez collapsed the
front end of his racer. Speed took command of the race on the restart, while
Butch Irwin moved into third. The most serious incident of the race occurred
on lap ten when Tim Emmons flipped down the backstretch, fortunately he was
not injured.

Irwin and Scott Govertsen had a good race going for the second spot,
but Govertsen crashed into the turn two wall on lap twelve. That would set up
a five-lap shootout between Speed and Irwin. Irwin almost got by Speed on lap
15 when the back end of Speed's car broke loose. Speed hung on and still held
the top spot. Dave Kokindo took second away from Irwin on lap 16, but Irwin
got back by him one lap later. Speed took home his first win of the year; he
was followed by Irwin, Kokindo, Chris Morris and Jim Lagenback.

Donnie Denue took the lead on the first lap of the 15-lap IMCA
modified feature and never looked back. Denue was able to open a twenty-car
advantage before the caution flew on lap nine. There was some very good
racing between Brian Wilbur and Jim Rajczi throughout the race. They battled
each other for fourth on lap five and would race in the latter stages for the
third position. Wilbur came out of their contest with the third place finish.
Donnie Denue came home in the runner-up spot. Kevin Huff rounded out the top
five finishers.

Tommy Corellis also got to visit victory lane on Saturday night.
Rifenburg Construction ran a special dump truck race and Corellis took home
the win in that match race.
