CART: Road America Saturday Notes/Quotes
10 July 1999
Robby Gordon #22 Johns Manville/Panasonic/Menards Toyota-Swift Practice/Qualifying Notes/Quotes Saturday, July 10, 1999 Texaco/Havoline 200 Round 10 of 20 in the CART FedEx Championship Series Road America, Elkhart Lake, Wis. Fighting a loose condition in virtually every corner today, Robby Gordon and Team Gordon qualified the Johns/Manville/Menards/Panasonic Toyota-powered Swift 23rd for Sunday's Texaco/Havoline 200 at Elkhart Lake, Wisconsin. Gordon's best lap clocked in at 103.653 seconds. Quotes ROBBY GORDON "I'm not saying anything. But I'll tell you the car's good in some corners, however in others that are similar, it's horrible. I almost had two huge offs in that qualifying session. In the last one in Turn One, where I spun, I came close to duplicating Carpentier's adventure. So, I guess I have that going for me. It's loose on exit and we haven't found the answer for that. We battle the same things every weekend, and here is no different. For the race, we're going to have the same strategy we had in Cleveland and charge forward as best we can. If the race comes to us like it did in Cleveland, we'll charge even harder. Last year, I started deep in the back and finished in the points, so let's see if we can duplicate that this year." MIKE HELD (co-owner) "We aren't getting it now. Rob's frustrated. David (Cripps) is frustrated. And I'm frustrated. It's so hard to start from the back. It just seems everything we throw at the car, lately, hasn't worked. We'll go racing tomorrow, though. No matter where you start, there is a chance." STEVE ABRAHAMS (hospitality manager) "Watching Rob in the Hurry Downs section, I could see the car's loose condition. He almost lost it once and had the car sideways. That's got to be hard to control. I know the kind of racer he is, though. He beats me in go-karting every time we go out. On Sunday, he'll be fired up, for sure, and ready to race.
