SANTA MARIA SPEEDWAY HOSTS MIDGET CARS & TQs SATURDAY

Bud Kaeding, Thomas Meseraull and Greg Edenholm scored USAC "Western" feature victories this past weekend but Todd Ellison, Bobby Boone and J.J. Ercse hold the top spot in their respective racing series point standings.

The MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car and TQ Midget Car series combine for this Saturday night's "doubleheader" program at the 1/3-mile dirt Santa Maria (Calif.) Speedway. A 20-lap TQ and 30-lap Midget Car feature are on tap.

Kaeding, of Campbell, Calif., scored a clean sweep of Saturday night's Sprint Car card at Tucson (Ariz.) Raceway Park, posting fast qualifying time, then winning his heat race and the 40-lap feature in his Consani Special. He was trailed by Ellison, Burney Lamar, Rick Hendrix and Rick Williams, passing Williams on the 17th lap and leading the rest of the way. Lamar led the first lap before yielding to Williams.

Meseraull, of San Jose, Calif., recorded his first USAC triumph in Sunday night's 30-lap MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car feature at Bakersfield (Calif.) Speedway. He passed Shane Scully on lap 11 and led to the checkered to beat Wally Pankratz, Bryan Stanfill, Scully and Alex Harris. The win ended an eventful night for Meseraull, who flipped his Independent Construction/TST Motorsports machine during the first heat race but came back to win the semi.

Edenholm, of Agouro, Calif., won Sunday night's 20-lap MCI WorldCom TQ Midget Car race at Bakersfield, passing Walt Johnson on lap six and leading the rest of the way. Series point leader Ercse took second ahead of 2000 Olympic Games competitor Josh Lakatos, Johnson and Todd Hunsaker.

Ellison broke his Sprint Car tie with Tony Hunt as Hunt finished sixth at Tucson. The two are separated by only 11 points going into a September 16 event at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway. Boone's Midget Car lead over Danny Ebberts stands at 14 points after Ebberts flipped during the Bakersfield feature. Pankratz ranks third, only 31 back of the leader going into this Saturday night's races at Santa Maria. Ercse's TQ point lead is 42 over Johnson entering the Saturday night Bakersfield races.
