NOTES AND QUOTES:
* The Pennzoil World of Outlaws concludes its "Month of Money" with the most prestigious event on the 2000 calendar, the Amoco Knoxville Nationals. First run in 1961, the Knoxville Nationals has earned its reputation on the sprint car circuit. Three days of preliminary races set the stage for Saturday night's 30-lap showdown. Goodyear has an astounding record at the Knoxville Nationals, winning the event for 17 consecutive years.
* Goodyear will bring more than 800 tires to Knoxville for the Outlaws in several compounds and sizes. The tire giant has increased its testing program and presence in the World of Outlaws series, introducing several new tires into competition this season.
* Goodyear is proud of its performance at the Knoxville Nationals. "It is extremely important for Goodyear to be a part of the World of Outlaws circuit and to win the series' most prestigious race," says Paul Lauritzen, Goodyear's operations manager for sprint/dirt racing. "For the racers, Knoxville is their Daytona, their Indianapolis. The Knoxville Nationals are steeped in tradition and the dollars aren't bad either. They rely on Goodyear to field a quality product that will get them to the winner's circle."
* Goodyear's commitment to the sprint car series led to the development of new tires for the 2000 season. "The technology in this series increases every year and that extends to tires, as well," Lauritzen says. "We knew we had to make some changes to our tires in order to stay on top of the game."
Goodyear engineers evaluated the current line of tires in the early portion of the season and the first new tires were available at Knoxville's April race. Prior to the new tires' debut, Goodyear had four "A" Feature wins in 12 races; since then, Goodyear Eagles have won 20 of 28 main events. More new tires made their first appearances at Heartland Park Topeka and Eagle Raceway.
"We plan to keep working on developing tires, improving the race product and helping our teams to get the job done," Lauritzen adds. "Our most recent test at Lernerville was highly successful and we are hoping to introduce the new tires shortly."
