Tracks: Sprint cars return to Bloomington Speedway Friday

SCOUTS, SHRINERS, XJD EMPLOYEES, AND G.E.'S SECOND SHIFT JOIN THE FUN NON WINGED SPRINTS, INDIANA SUPER STOCKS, & BOMBERS ON THE RED CLAY

(Bloomington, Ind.)--Boy Scouts and Girl Scouts all work hard to make their community a better place to live. We hope that their evening at Bloomington Speedway will serve as an appropriate reward for their hard work. Any scout or scout leader in uniform or with proper identification will be admitted as the guests of Bloomington Speedway.

Shriners will be admitted to Bloomington Speedway Grandstand for half price by merely presenting their current dues card.

XJD and G.E. Second Shift employees will also be admitted to the Grandstand for half price by presenting their discount cards.

Pennzoil Cup Non Winged Sprint Cars

After two weeks off, the sprint cars will return to the familiar red clay of Bloomington Speedway on August 11. Well, most of them haven't exactly been off. They just haven't been at Bloomington. Most of them competed in the Pennzoil Indiana Sprint Week. And a lot of them needed the off weekend of the Brickyard to put their equipment back together and salve the bruised egos that Sprint Week competition can provide. Some pretty big names wound up loading their racers after the "B" Feature. When forty to sixty cars compete, most of them aren't going to make the 22 car feature.

Only two points races remain for Pennzoil Cup Sprint Car drivers to earn 2000 points. Since Kevin Briscoe and Chris LaFollette finished fifth and sixth respectively in Pennzoil Indiana Sprint Week competition at Bloomington Speedway, the competition for the Pennzoil Cup Championship is closer than it's been all season. It's beginning to look like the champion will drive a white car. Will it be emblazoned with a red five or a silver three? You'll have to wait and see.

Of course, it is possible that the two front runners could completely fall apart. If that happened defending Pennzoil Cup champion Derek Scheffel could have a shot. However, his hopes for a "threepeat took a serious hit when Todd Kane's steering broke in the Pennzoil Indiana Sprint Week competition at Bloomington Speedway. Kane's car crossed Scheffel's path; and Scheffel took a bad ride. He missed a good finish in that race; and he will probably be pretty well relegated to his backup car for the rest of the season.

The August 11 race will also be the final tuneup for the NAMARS Indiana Five Crown and the 12th Annual Sheldon Kinser Memorial. They will be doing everything possible to gain momentum going into those two big shows.

TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCKS

The Tire & Wheel Center Super Stocks race seems to be coming down to a tussle between Lee Hobbs and Greg Kendall. They have both been steady performers all season. Hobbs gets the edge in the "laps" department as he also runs a O'Neal Wood Products Open Wheel Modified. Both of their cars are well prepared every week. Who will win on August 11? Come to Bloomington Speedway and see.

BOMBERS

August 11 will be the final appearance of the year on the famous Bloomington Speedway red clay. Sam Chastain won the May 12 Bomber feature while Bubba Woods beat out Larry Harris on July 28. Only seven drivers made both feature events this season; and Matt Bex had the best combined performance with a third and a fourth. Larry Harris was second best with a 12th and a 2nd place finish. Bubba Woods, Jim Ruddick, Sam Chastain, Robert Walters, and Joe Johnson all turned in a strong performance in one of the event. They will probably be trying to at least duplicate their best performance on August 11.

TIRE & WHEEL CENTER SUPER STOCK OWNERS & MECHANICS RACE

The Super Stock owners and mechanics will get their chance to tear up the machines that they have been preparing all season. They may, however, be a little reluctant to bend their mounts; because they probably can't rely on their drivers to put them back together.

Grandstand Admission is $10 and pit admission is $20.
