Dave Darland of Kokomo, Ind., whose Indy Racing League test session late last year was abbreviated due to mechanical problems at Texas Motor Speedway, earned a second chance by winning Friday night's 30-lap Hemelgarn Racing "Rollie Beale Night" Stoops Freightliner USAC Sprint Car feature at the Toledo (Ohio) Speedway.
Darland received an Indy Racing Northern Light Series test session with Hemelgarn Racing as part of his prize package after leading all 30 laps around the 1/2-mile paved Toledo oval. He drove the Kroger/Pringles/Sunny Delight Special to the win.
Darland's victory boosted him to fifth in the new series standings going into this Saturday night's Turbines, Inc. "Indiana Sprint Classic" at Indianapolis Raceway Park. Practice starts at 6 pm and qualifying begins at 7. The first race is at 8 and the feature is 30 laps.
Ryan Newman was Friday's Turbines, inc. fastest qualifier at Toledo. Tony Ave, J.J. Yeley, Billy Puterbaugh and Jack Hewitt won the heats and Brian Tyler won the True Value semi.
Trailing Darland to the checkered flag in the feature were Tracy Hines, Jay Drake, Dave Steele and Steve Surniak.
