Davey Hamilton of Boise, Ida., the only driver to start every Indy
Racing
Northern Light Series event since the series' inception, leads the USAC
Western Sprint Car Series standings as the series gears up for three
pavement races in five nights.
Hamilton, who will compete in the IRL event at Texas Motor Speedway this weekend, will be unable to participate at Tucson, but plans on racing at Albuquerque, N.M. Monday and Dodge City, Kans. Wednesday. Hamilton's Consani Racing machine will be driven by 3-time USAC Silver Crown Champion Jimmy Sills of Placerville, Calif. at Tucson.
A 40-lap feature event is on tap at each of the three venues comprising the "swing." Tucson Raceway Park hosts this Saturday night's opener, while Monday night's (June 12) events are at Sandia Motorsports Park in Albuquerque and Wednesday night's (June 14) races are at the brand-new Dodge City (Kans.) Raceway Park. The Tucson and Dodge City tracks and 3/8-miles and Albuquerque is a 4/10-mile oval.
Todd Ellison of West Jordan, Utah trails Hamilton by 55 points after the first six races. His worst finish has been seventh but he has yet to crack the winner's circle. One reason is that Hamilton has won four of the races so far this season. The other winners were Mike Boat at Bakersfield, Calif. and Tony Hunt at Madera, Calif. Boat and Hunt rank fifth and sixth respectively in the series standings.
A total of 216 points are up for grabs in the three races, which are sure to play a pivotal role in determining this year's Western Sprint car Series Champion. Hamilton has never won a USAC championship, despite numerous feature event wins in Sprint Cars, Midget Cars and Supermodifieds.
