Rain delayed the action for the first day of qualifying for the professional classes. The dark clouds above the race track were a constant reminder of things to come.
Troy Coughlin was the first of the two JEG'S Mail Order Olds Cutlass' to take on the track. Troy ran a 6.893 at 200.80 mph and landed in the No. 5 spot after the first session.
"I was a little surprised when the guys told me what I ran over the radio," commented Troy. "I think that we learned a lot about the track and that should really help us tomorrow."
The car that ran ahead of Jeg in his lane dumped a trail of oil from the burnout box to the 60-foot clock. Jeg waited in his car under the tower while the NHRA safety safari cleaned up the oil on the track.
When the action resumed Jeg pulled up to the starting line and the rain was on the verge of coming down again. Jeg ran a 6.933 at 200.05 mph and ended up in the No. 11 position.
"When the car left the line it took off to the left. I had to drive it back to the middle of the groove," said Jeg. "It wasn't a pretty run, but it's a place to start."
