POMONA, Calif. - Tony Schumacher and Bob Panella clinched Winston championships in their respective pro categories while Gary Scelzi earned his second Big Bud Shootout victory and eighth top qualifying position of the season to highlight Saturday's racing at the 35th annual Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals at Pomona Raceway.

Ron Capps, Troy Coughlin and Matt Hines also claimed top qualifying honors in their respective pro categories at the $1.7 million race, the final of 22 events in the $40 million NHRA Winston Drag Racing Series.

By qualifying for Sunday's 11 a.m. eliminations, Schumacher, from Park Ridge, Ill., clinched his first Winston Top Fuel championship and accompanying $200,000 payday, officially closing the books on the most competitive Top Fuel season in NHRA history.

"It's a relief to finally get this one in the books," said Exide Batteries dragster driver Schumacher, son of Funny Car pioneer Don Schumacher. "It was really a tough year. Now we can focus on winning the race tomorrow. It's been a great season and that's just a tribute to our team and Dan (Olson, crew chief). They've just been fantastic this season and my dad gave them enough parts to work with. Winning the championship was a total team effort."

Panella, from Stockton, Calif., secured his first Winston championship by advancing to the semifinals in Pro Stock Truck.

"I can't even describe the feeling," said second-year truck driver Panella, a former Comp Eliminator racer. "I've spent many sleepless nights for the last month or so. This is just unbelievable. I'm just happy to finally get it done."

Scelzi, from Fresno, Calif., became $100,000 richer when he drove his Team Winston dragster to the victory in the special event for the season's eight-quickest Top Fuel drivers. Scelzi, also the category's top qualifier with a 4.570 at 322.11, posted a winning run of 4.595 seconds at 320.43 mph, running away from defending Big Bud Shootout winner Doug Kalitta's Kitty Hawk entry, which lost traction and ran 10.176 at 77.35.

"This is a great way to start a great weekend," Scelzi said. "It's great for me as a driver to get back in the winner's circle. It's great for Alan (crew chief) because he's tuning the car and it's not blowing up. The car's going down the racetrack and that's what's important. My confidence is back and I'm feeling good. The team really needed this."

If Scelzi can win tomorrow's eliminations, he stands to earn over $204,000 for the weekend, which includes a $50,000 'double-up' bonus from the NHRA. Joe Amato is the only Top Fuel driver in NHRA history to earn the 'double-up' bonus (1990).

Capps, from San Diego, held on to the top spot in Funny Car, earning his first No. 1 qualifying effort of the season with a career-best time of 4.853 at 309.34 in his Copenhagen Camaro.

Coughlin, from Columbus, Ohio, earned his first No. 1 qualifying position of the season, driving his Jeg's Mail Order Oldsmobile Cutlass to a 6.901 at 198.99 to lead the 16-car order.

Trinidad, Colo.'s Hines earned his 10th No. 1 qualifying award of the season, riding his Eagle One Suzuki to a track record time of 7.198 at 185.33. He and Winston points leader Angelle Seeling will decide the Pro Stock Motorcycle points championship during Sunday's eliminations. Seeling leads Hines by 12 points.

Four Chevy S-10s will square off in tomorrow's Pro Stock Truck semifinals. Panella will face Greg Stanfield, while Mark Osborne will race Stevie Johns.
