USAC: Leffler, Ellison take Irwindale and Wynn's Money, Midgets move to Ventura next

MIDGET CARS AT VENTURA 10/30, SPRINTS "OFF" UNTIL NOVEMBER Jason Leffler of Long Beach, Calif. and Todd Ellison of West Jordan Utah earned USAC feature victories in Saturday night's USAC "tripleheader" at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway. Leffler earned a $2,000 cash bonus from the Wynn's Challenge as one of three drivers who were eligible, while Ellison also earned a $1,000 cash bonus from Wynn's as one of three eligible in his feature field.
The USAC MCI WorldCom Midget Cars return to action October 30 at the Ventura (Calif.) Raceway in a program also featuring the USAC MCI WorldCom TQ Midget Cars, while the USAC Western Sprint Cars are idle until their November 6 Irwindale return.
Leffler led all but the first three laps of Saturday night's 30-lap MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car race in his Wynn's/ASE/Beast/PRI Pink Ford. Bobby Boone, who led the first three laps on the 1/2-mile paved oval, finished second ahead of Tracy Hines, Jay Drake and Ryan Newman. Leffler was also the fastest Midget Car qualifier and won his heat race. His teammate Tony Ave escaped injury when he flipped during a heat.
Ellison, who ranks sixth in the Western Sprint Car standings, tracked down Rick Williams on the 28th lap and led the final three laps in his Custom Industries/Temple's Machine/Central Body Shop Special to beat Williams to the checkered flag. Jason McCord, Tony Hunt and Bobby McMahan rounded out the "top-five" in the 30-lapper as Bud Kaeding's bid for a sixth consecutive Irwindale victory ended in an eighth-place finish.
Marc DeBeaumont, who was sixth in the Irwindale Midget Car feature continues to lead the MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car standings over Shane Scully, who finished 14th at Irwindale.
