The Shav Glick Award, named for the venerable Los Angeles Times
motorsports writer, will be presented annually to a Californian for
distinguished achievement in motor racing. The award will be given for the
first time next spring at the NASCAR Winston Cup NAPA Auto Parts 500 at
California Speedway.
The announcement was made by John Dillon, vice president-marketing for award sponsor Eagle One, a leading marketer of premium automotive appearance care products. Eagle One is a business unit of The Valvoline Co. "Shav is uniquely deserving of special recognition for the many years he has reigned as one of the deans of motorsports journalism and for his admirable support of motor racing," said Dillon. "This award will ensure that his name will long be associated with the sport."
Glick has reported on racing for the Times for 36 years. Dillon said that California has always been in the forefront of racing and is the home of many drivers, owners, mechanics, executives and others who have contributed to the growth and popularity of the sport. They will be the candidates for the Shav Glick Award. Judges will be Bill Center of the San Diego Union, Mike Harris of the Associated Press, Mary-Ellen Wright-Rana of Laguna Seca Raceway, Jim Short of the Riverside Press-Enterprise, Doug Stokes of Irwindale Raceway, and John Zimmermann, editor of Racer magazine.
