USAC: Lang claims 5th Speedrome Title, New Castle Finale September 11

Michael Lang of Indianapolis, Ind. locked up his fifth Indianapolis Speedrome Midget Car Series Championship Wednesday night, winning the 50-lap feature event at the 1/5-mile paved oval in his Keco/AdTech Floor Care/IFI/Clark Tire/Stebbins Aviation Fontana-powered car.

Lang's victory was his seventh this season and the 54th of his Speedrome career. The championship is his sixth in a row in USAC competition, having won the 1994-95-96-97 Speedrome titles and the 1998 16th Street Speedway crown. He thus becomes the first driver in history to win USAC championships in six consecutive years.

Lang passed Daryl Campbell on the 41st lap Wednesday night and led the final 10 laps for the win, beating Campbell, Norm Young, David Fuhrman and Brian Hornick to the checkered flag. John Mount led the first 11 laps and Campbell the next 29 before Lang took over. Heat races went to Lang, Campbell and Mount and Jason Atkinson won a "last chance" race.

The Indianapolis Speedrome Midget Car Series concludes on Saturday night, September 11, with a race at the Mount Lawn Speedway in New Castle, Ind.
