F2000: Jeff Wright upsets Mid-Ohio F2000 field

17 August 1999

In only his second career United States F2000 National Championship start, Irishman Jeff Wright beat Englishman Dan Wheldon to the checkered flag in Saturday's 22-lap race at the Mid-Ohio Sports Car Course in Lexington, Ohio.

Wright drove the Jetboy/Casabella/Cap Van Diemen Ford to the victory.

Wright battled Wheldon wheel-to-wheel for the first 14 laps of the race, then led the final eight around the 2.26-mile course to post a 4-446-second victory. Wheldon's second-place finish enabled him to close on series point leader Marc-Antoine Camirand, whose fifth-place finish at Mid-Ohio left him holding a slim 12-point lead going into an August 29 race at Pikes Peak International Raceway in Fountain, Colo.

Andy Lally, Daniel Muniz and Camirand rounded out the "top-five" in Saturday's race, run on a wet track.

Justin Pritchard of Pickerington, Ohio finished ninth overall to take the ACC class for older cars.
