Tracks: Humphrey takes lead in modified points, UMRA TQ Midgets on the oval Friday at Bloomington
12 August 1999
BLOOMINGTON, IN - With four victories in Bloomington's UMP Modified division, including the last two events, Bloomington's Ray Humphrey has returned to the top of the modified points. This coincides with the announcement of new sponsorship of the group, by O'Neal Wood Products in Martinsville. Matt Tiller, who hasn't had the success he experienced when he won the point championship last year, slipped six points behind Humphrey, with Jack Taylor third, 25 points behind. Rookie Levi Ray Godsey has climbed up to fifth in the O'Neal Wood Products Modifieds points. In competition against the All Stars, Derek Scheffel, of Columbus, added five points to his lead over Terre Haute's Kenny Carmichael in Bloomington's Pennzoil Cup sprint car series. Justin Marvel, of Brownsburg, kept pace as six of the top seven in points (Scheffel, Carmichael, Marvel, Lennie Waltz, Levi Jones and Jonathan Vennard) bolted wings onto their sprinters for the Dizz Wilson Tribute event. The Pennzoil Cup sprinters will return to action on August 20, in the Indiana 5 Crown race, which is the final point paying race of the season.
The Indiana Street Stocks have also gained sponsorship, from Bloomington's Tire & Wheel Center, and are now known as the Tire & Wheel Street Stocks. Just in time, Perry Bruce's victory a week ago Friday gained ten points on the street stock point leader, Lee Hobbs, moving the defending champion up another spot, to fifth. Hobbs lead is nearly 60 points, which will be hard to make up in the remaining races.
Track officials have announced that the final points race for the O'Neal Wood Products Modifieds and the Tire & Wheel Center Street Stocks will be the $500-to-win features during the Sheldon Kinser Memorial on August 27. Sprint car awards will be presented during the Sheldon Kinser program. Awards for the modifieds and street stocks will be presented September 17, as part of the Indiana Street Stock and UMP Modified Nationals.
Coming up this Friday, the second special Fan Appreciation Night this season, general admission will be half price, $5. The UMRA TQ (three-quarter) Midgets make their appearance on the Bloomington oval. Last years' memorable event saw Terry Goff charge to victory from tenth, over Robert Nichols, Chris Coers and Travis Welpott. The O'Neal Wood Products Modifieds and the Tire & Wheel Center Street Stocks will also be in competition. Gates will open at 5:30, with hot laps at 6:30 and racing beginning at 7:45. Youths 12 and under are free with adult admission.
