USAC: Coors Light Silver Bullet Series Results, Madison, IL

1 August 1999

Madison, Ill. - Results Friday night (July 30) from the running of the "Shop-N-Save 100" Coors Light Silver Bullet Series Race at Gateway International Raceway, with starting position in parentheses, driver, hometown, laps completed, reason out if any and money won:

Ryan Newman of South Bend, Ind. fought off a determined challenge from Kenny Irwin of Huntersville, N.C. to win Friday night's "Shop-N-Save 100" USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet race at Gateway International Raceway in Madison, Ill.

Newman and Irwin traded the lead back and forth numerous times over the final 75 laps around the 1.25-mile paved oval and Newman averaged just over 100 mph. for the 80-lap distance in his Welsch Heating & Air Conditioning/M & L Plumbing/VHT Special.

"It's kind of like Earnhardt at Talladega," said Newman in victory lane after the race run in 96-degree heat. "I knew it's best to be out front. My spotter told me to push the pedal late so I did. Basically you have to run where the other cars aren't to do well here. The heat was miserable. After tonight the rest of the races will be a piece of cake."

Newman's victory extended his lead in the series going into the August 4 "Dupont 100" at Indianapolis Raceway Park where Irwin will again challenge him in round eight of the 15-round 1999 series.

Pole winner Jack Hewitt of Troy, Ohio took third after qualifying at 140981 mph. Gary Hieber of Langhorne, Pa. and Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind. rounded out the "top-five," Hines coming from the back of the field on a restart after an early pit stop for oiling.
