USAC: Pennzoil Sprint Week Offers Over $126,000 and National TV Coverage

20 July 1999

Over $126,000 in total prizes and awards are up for grabs for participants in the 1999 Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" which opens Wednesday with six races in eight nights to determine the champion.

Thirty-lap Stoops Freightliner USAC Sprint Car features are scheduled Wednesday at the Terre Haute Action Track, Thursday at Lawrenceburg Speedway, Friday at Bloomington Speedway, Saturday at Lincoln Park Speedway in Putnamville and Sunday at Kokomo Speedway before the series too big for one state concludes on Wednesday, July 28 at the Eldora Speedway in Rossburg, Ohio. Dave Darland is the defending champion, beating Tony Elliott by a single point last year!

Nearly 50 pre-entries have already been received for the 12th annual series which includes some of USAC's most traditional events. Wednesday night's race at Terre Haute is the 29th running of the "Tony Hulman Classic," while the "Larry Rice Classic" is on tap at Bloomington Friday. ESPN2 will capture all the excitement of the opener and closer at Terre Haute and Eldora respectively for a national audience.

Defending Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" Champion Dave Darland also leads the 1999 Stoops Freightliner Sprint Car points in quest of his first championship in that series. He leads Tracy Hines by 34 points but with 432 total points available in the next six races, the standings could undergo a major shakeup.

USAC has sanctioned the Pennzoil "Indiana Sprint Week" since 1995 but its history dates back to 1988 when Randy Kinser was the champion. Other champions have been Chuck Amati (1989) Amati and Gary Trammell (1990), Bob Kinser (1991), Kevin Thomas (1992, 1993, 1995 and 1996), Kelly Kinser (1994) and J.J. Yeley (1997).
