USAC: Rain Halts 16th Street; Anderson Feature Resumes Wednesday

Rain forced a halt to the USAC Midget Car racing program at the 16th Street Speedway in Indianapolis, Ind. Saturday night. Participants had completed qualifications, a non-qualifiers race and the first heat and were in the midst of heat number two when the rains hit the 1/4-mile dirt track. Jerry Coons, Jr. had outqualified a field of 45 cars, while Steve Arnold won the non-qualifiers race and Ronnie Day won the first heat.Another rain-interrupted program is scheduled to be concluded this Wednesday night when the MCI WorldCom National Midget Cars return to the Anderson (Ind.) Speedway. Thirty-eight laps remain in the 40-lap feature event which was halted after two laps by rain June 16. Brian Gerster will lead the restart order on the 1/4-mile paved oval.
The next scheduled event at the 16th Street Speedway is the $140,000 Clabber Girl "Summer Sizzle '99" July 6-10, the nation's richest-ever Midget Car event.
