USAC: Harris Scores Initial Midget Car Win at Madera

22 June 1999

Two-time MCI WorldCom USAC TQ Midget Car Champion Alex Harris of Simi Valley, Calif. scored his initial victory in the MCI WorldCom USAC Western Midget Car Series Saturday night at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway. He caught Chuck Gurney, Jr. on the seventh lap and led the rest of the 30-lapper in his West Valley Grinding Esslinger to beat series point leader Marc DeBeaumont, Thomas Messeraul, Sterling Pratz and Shane Scully to the checkered flag.

Gurney, who led the first six laps, eventually fell victim to mechanical problems and failed to finish the 30-lapper, which was co-sanctioned by BCRA. DeBeaumont, Saturday night's fastest qualifier and first heat winner, continues to lead the series standings by 56 points over Scully.

The MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car Series resumes action on July 3 at the Irwindale (Calif.) Speedway in a "doubleheader" program also involving the MCI WorldCom TQ Midget Cars.
