Tracks: Hobbs Returns For Victory and Point Lead at Bloomington

LATE MODELS DEBUT AT BLOOMINGTON FRIDAYBLOOMINGTON, IN - Bedford's Lee Hobbs returned to Bloomington Speedway Friday night, after taking the previous race night off to honor a family commitment, and picked up without missing a beat. Hobbs' resounding victory in the 25-lap Indiana Street Stock feature event has again given him sole possession of the division's point lead. With his third main event win in '99, Hobbs moves 13 points ahead of Jerry Hepworth. Don Bush Jr. has climbed to third in the points, and heads a group of veteran drivers who aim to give the Bedford racing chassis builder a run for the title.
Kerry Norris' feature victory, combined with a problem-filled night for Ray Humphrey, has narrowed the UMP Modified division. Norris has closed the gap to a single point behind Humphrey, with Matt Tiller, Jack Taylor and Richie Lex in striking distance of the leaders. In spite a record of feature race wins, Norris has never won a title at Bloomington in the modified division.
In Bloomington's Pennzoil Cup sprint car division, Derek Scheffel strengthened his hold on the top point position by setting fast time and finishing fourth Friday night. Kenny Carmichael finished thirteenth, slipping to 35 points behind the Columbus Kid. Brad Fox's second feature victory moved him up to fifth in points. Lennie Waltz continues to climb the point ladder with consistent performances. Last Friday, Waltz moved to sixth in the standings with a tenth place feature run. On the heels of his first Bloomington feature victory, Jason Knoke finished sixth and advanced to eighth in the points.
The UMP Modified and Indiana Street Stock racing wars continue at Bloomington Speedway this Friday. The racing program features the Northern All Stars Late Model stock car series in their first appearance at Bloomington Speedway. The Northern All Stars will be racing for $2,000-to-win. The top ten in Northern All Stars points includes: Ernie Barrow, Steve Barnett, Dan Sturgeon, Dion Deason, Doug Alt, Scott James, Tory Collins, Shawn Negangard, Doug McCammon and John Gill.
The grandstand gates will open at 5:30, the pit gate at 4:30, with hot laps at 6:30 and racing at 7:45. Admission is $12 for this event, with pit admission at $20. Youths 12 & under are free with an adult.
