USAC: Williams, Coons Take Tucson Raceway Features
15 June 1999
MIDGETS AT MADERA SATURDAY; SPRINTS IDLE UNTIL JULY 10Rick Williams of San Leandro, Calif. and Jerry Coons, Jr. of Tucson, Ariz. captured USAC "Western" feature victories in Saturday night's "doubleheader" racing program at Tucson Raceway Park.
Williams pushed his Pro West Machine Special past Bud Kaeding on the 34th lap and led the final seven laps to beat Kaeding, Curtis Brown, Tony Hunt (who led the first 31 laps) and Rick Hendrix in the Sprint race, while Coons also had to get by Kaeding to win the 30-lap MCI WorldCom Midget Car feature. Coons and the Jim Cook Sunrooms of Colorado Brayton slipped past Kaeding on lap 25 and led the rest of the way to beat Chuck Gurney, Jr., Kaeding, Shane Scully and fast qualifier Alex Harris. Scully led the first 19 laps and Kaeding led the next five before yielding to Coons.
Williams, the fastest Tucson Sprint qualifier, now trails Kaeding by 64 points as the series takes a hiatus, resuming competition at Silver State Raceway in Carson City, Nev. July 10.
Marc DeBeaumont, who finished eighth at Tucson, continues to lead the MCI WorldCom Western Midget Car standings as the series gears up for this Saturday night's appearance (co-sanctioned by BCRA) at the Madera (Calif.) Speedway. A 30-lap feature follows complete prelims on the 1/3-mile paved oval.
