USAC: Lang Notches 48th Win at the Speedrome
25 May 1999
Michael Lang, who narrowly missed in his 1998 bid for an unprecedented fifth consecutive Indianapolis Speedrome USAC Midget Car title, took the first step toward returning to the throne with his 50-lap feature victory last Wednesday night. The win was his 48th in the series which dates back to 1981.Lang, making his first start of the season in the Speedrome series, ended Norm Young's bid for a record-tying third consecutive victory by passing Young on lap 26 and never looking back. He led the final 25 laps in his AdTech/Keco/Symbol Mattress Company/IFI Fontana-powered machine.
Young, who would have become only the second driver in Speedrome history to win the three opening races in the series (Mel Kenyon did it in 1994), finished second ahead of 1998 series "Rookie of the Year" Gregg Cory, A.J. Davis and David Fuhrman. Cory led the first 15 laps and Young led the next 10 before yielding to Lang.
The Speedrome Midget Car series continues its Wednesday night run this Wednesday with another 50-lap feature on tap.
