IRL: St. James Enters Indy 500 with Team Pelfrey

13 May 1999

INDIANAPOLIS - Lyn St. James, one of only two women to start in the Indianapolis 500, was entered in this year's race by Team Pelfrey, Indianapolis Motor Speedway and Pep Boys Indy Racing League officials announced May 12.

St. James, from Indianapolis, will attempt to qualify for her seventh career start in the Greatest Spectacle in Racing. She will drive the #90 Team Pelfrey Dallara/Aurora/Firestone as a teammate to Robby Unser, 1998 Pep Boys Indy Racing League Sprint PCS Rookie of the Year.

Her best finish was 11th in 1992, her rookie year. She was named Indianapolis 500 Bank One Rookie of the Year. She has entered the event every year since, qualifying for the 33-car starting field every year except 1998.

The only woman besides St. James to race in the Indianapolis 500 was Janet Guthrie, who made three consecutive starts between 1977-79.

In other entry news, veteran Raul Boesel has moved from McCormack Motorsports to Brant Racing to become the driver of the #3 Brant Racing R&S MKV Riley & Scott/Aurora/Goodyear. Tony Kenter is the new chief mechanic. Boesel replaces Andy Michner in the Brant Racing car.

McCormack Motorsports has not announced a replacement for Boesel as driver of its #30 TransWorld Racing-McCormack Motorsports G Force/Aurora/Firestone.

The Indianapolis 500 takes place May 30. Practice opens May 15, with Pole Day May 22, Bubble Day May 23 and Coors Carburetion Day May 27.
