USAC: Young Wins Again at Speedrome, Goes for 'Triple' This Wednesday

11 May 1999

Norm Young of Franklin, Ind. will try for a third consecutive feature victory when the Indianapolis Speedrome USAC Midget Car Series resumes this Wednesday night.

Young won last Wednesday night's 50-lap feature at the 1/5-mile paved oval in his Kelly Designs/IFI Floorings/Matlock Ford-Mercury VW, leading the last 33 laps after passing 1998 series "Rookie of the Year" Gregg Cory. Cory wound up second ahead of A.J. Davis, Jim Sawyer and Ron Hamm, who led the first 15 laps before yielding to Cory.

Only once before in Speedrome Midget history has a driver won the first three races in the series. That was in 1994 when Mel Kenyon turned the feat. The all-time record for consecutive Speedrome Midget wins is Michael Lang's six in 1996. Rich Vogler won five in 1995, while Lang won four straight in 1994 and 1995. Drivers who have won three straight at the Speedrome since the series' inception in 1981 are Ted Hines in 1992, and Lang and John Sluss last year.

All gate receipts from Wednesday night';s racing program are being donated by race organizer John Stiles to THE CARE FUND, to aid victims of the May 1 tragedy at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte, N.C. Donations to the fund may be directed to Lowe's Motor Speedway, P.O. Box 600, Concord, N.C., 28026, ATTN: THE CARE FUND.
