USAC: MCI Worldcom National/Western States Midget Qualifying

7 February 1999

PHOENIX, AZ - Results Saturday afternoon (February 6) from qualifications for the running of the 22nd Annual U.S. Tobacco Co. "Copper World Classic", to be held Sunday (February 7) at Phoenix International Raceway, with position, car number in parentheses, driver, hometown and speed.

Track record holder Dave Steele of Tampa, Fla. claimed his second straight pole starting spot for the "Copper World Classic" USAC Coors Light Silver Bullet race Saturday afternoon at Phoenix International Raceway. His speed in the Aristocrat Products/Raybestos Chevy was 138.100 mph., just shy of his 138.451 record of a year ago. Sunday's feature race, one of four comprising the "Copper World," is a 50-miler.

"I've always had back luck in this race in the past," said Steele. "I hope I can change that tomorrow. We learned a lesson last vyear when we backed up late in the race due to tire problems. We've got a good basic setup for the race, so we should have a good chance.:

Steele, who also qualified third for the USAC MCI WorldCom Midget Car race, will be joined on the front row of the 30-car Silver Bullet field by Tracy Hines of New Castle, Ind., who qualified at 137.756 mph.
