Milan, Jan. 18, 2011: The online form is now active (www.milano-sanremo.it) with which crews may enter the historic commemoration of the Coppa Milano–Sanremo, now in its ninth year: drivers and enthusiasts of vintage and other cars have until 10 February to enter the three-day event that will put their driving ability to the test in a classic regularity race, which is in the FIA/C.S.A.I. calendar for 11 – 13 March. The commemoration of the Coppa Milano–Sanremo is an event supported and promoted by the Automobile Club of Milan and organised by the MAC Group, the agency specialised in the planning, organisation and communication of major events.

“This year’s historic commemoration of the Coppa Milano–Sanremo – says Geronimo La Russa, Vice President of the Automobile Club Milan – has a very special meaning. Together with the MAC Group and the main Institutions of Milan and Lombardy, we have decided for the event to be part of the official tributes to the 150th anniversary of the Unity of Italy”.

As tradition demands, during the second week of March 150 selected cars will parade from Monza to Milan for the official start of the race, to be run over the Milan–Sanremo route and back. Vehicles eligible to take part in the regularity race are vintage cars built between 1906 and 1981. New for 2011 is the integrated collateral event called the Ferrari Grand Tour Milano–Sanremo (http://grantour.milano-sanremo.it): it is a classic regularity race along the same route as the commemoration event, reserved for a relevant number of cars of the Ferrari marque – an Italian symbol – registered between 1982 and today and organised under the aegis of the Prancing Horse.

The route of the ninth commemoration race has been renewed and will be circular; for the first time, the start will take place in Milan on the Friday afternoon with arrival in Turin that evening after the initial leg; on the Saturday, the cars will make their way to Sanremo, where the crews will have lunch before concluding the day in Genoa; on the Sunday, the race will finish in Milan, where there will be the final dinner and prize-giving. Among the principal stages of the Monza-Milan-Sanremo-Milan route are Genoa and Turin, cities symbolic of the official proclamation of the Realm of Italy in 1861 and the first capitals of a united Italy. “This year, as Geronimo La Russa said, the race is part of the programme of events supported by the Committee for the Celebration of a United Italy”, explained Sandro Binelli, president of the MAC Group, “returning to symbolically linking Milan, Turin and Genoa, the cities that began the industrialisation of the Italian economy at the end of the 19th century”.

In a motoring context, a special interpretation will be adopted to commemorate 150 years of Italian mobility: the 150 cars admitted to the race, together with other means of locomotion on display in Milan, will comprise a genuine mobile museum, able to tell the story of mobility from 1861 to today.

As with each year, the event supported and promoted by the Automobile Club of Milan and organised by the MAC Group, will carefully balance the sporting with the tourism aspect of the event, enhancing the qualities of the Italian territory: participants in the historic commemoration of the Coppa Milano–Sanremo will be able to admire and appreciate the environmental, food and wine culture of the areas along the route, which crosses Lombardy, Piedmont and Liguria.

Enthusiasm for cars and engines cannot disregard respect for the environment: for that reason, this year’s Coppa Milano–Sanremo will again adhere to the Lifegate Impact ZeroŽ project: in compliance with the Kyoto Protocol, the CO2 emissions caused by the race will be calculated and will be compensated for with the re-forestation of environmental green zones at risk. Therefore, the Coppa Milano–Sanremo is a non-polluting, zero impact vintage car race, conceived to reduce carbon dioxide emissions and to eliminate, wherever possible, superfluous consumption.

The cost of participation has been fixed at 2,500 euros per crew: that includes the classic regularity race entry fee and hospitality starting from the Friday until the Sunday conclusion of the event, lunches and dinners included.
