Tight Lime Rock Park Circuit Could Be The Spot For Barber History

LAKEVILLE, May 29, 2010: Ashley Freiberg is poised to make Skip Barber racing history this weekend (May 29-31) at Lime Rock Park.

The personable 18-year-old racer from Homer Glen, Ill., is attempting to become the first female driver to win a BFGoodrich Skip Barber National Series presented by Mazda race. She nearly did it last month at Virginia International Raceway.

The teenage driver scored a second place in the Virginia main event, but runner-up just isn’t good enough for Freiberg.

A former WKA karting champion recently won the Southern Regional championship with six wins in 12 races. But she admits winning on the national trail has been her goal all year.

“I was a rookie on the Barber National Series last year,” said Freiberg, who recently graduated from Lockport High School outside of Chicago. “And now I feel I have the chance to win races and compete for the championship. I have had a couple of mishaps early in the season, but my results are improving each race including second in Virginia.”

Freiberg has been working hard on and off the track in preparation for her summer races on the Barber National Series.

“I have been working out with a new program from Pit Fit in Indianapolis,” she said. “I am trying to strengthen my body to handle the rigors of the different road courses. Some places have a lot of G loads and I need to be in the best shape possible.”

In addition to her workout regime, Freiberg has been testing herself in a variety of racing disciplines including driving on skid beds, autocrosses and solo races.

“I have worked on car control and driving precise lines as the season goes on,” Ashley says. “I want to get better with my driving and continue the progress to get to the next level. I have also worked on my concentration level in the car.”

Freiberg has continued to win at the regional level with more victories last weekend. But her goal include wins in the Barber National Series.

“I was the first woman to win a Skip Barber championship earlier this year,” Freiberg admits. “Now, I want to be the first woman to win a National Series race and possibly a National Series title. When you get to this level, the competition is extremely hard. But I feel I am ready for the challenge and my first National win.”

If Ashley can win at Lime Rock this weekend, she will make history again.
