LAS VEGAS October 31, 2008: Pro Modified racer Troy Coughlin opened his weekend of JEGS ProMod Challenge action at The Strip at Las Vegas Motor Speedway with a picture-perfect 6.064-second pass at 234.74 mph that placed his JEGS.com Camaro fifth in the provisional field of the eighth annual ACDelco Las Vegas Nationals.
It was a long day at the track with numerous thrills and spills taking place in other professional classes but Coughlin calmly waited out the delays and made his mark in the final Pro Mod race of the season. Although the media's focus was on the championship point race between leader Josh Hernandez and second-place Tony Pontieri, Coughlin managed to get a lot of attention with his big run.
"It feels really great to have this car running so well," Coughlin said. "The last three events have really been fun and we're showing so much potential. I'm bummed out that it's the last race of the season because we're just not hitting our stride.
"It's cool to be up there in the mix at this race and it would certainly be a great way to end the year if we can carry this over to eliminations and win some rounds. If you can get through those first couple of sessions, you never know what might happen. I do feel comfortable in saying we have a car that is capable of winning this race."
Coughlin and the rest of the Pro Mod class will have one more session early Saturday afternoon to improve their qualifying positions at 1:30 p.m. before the schedule turns to Round 1 of eliminations at 4:30 p.m.
