NHRA (SONOMA) - LUCAS, RUPERT ON TOP; FIELDS SET AT INFINEON

In the final rounds of qualifying for this weekend's $181,400 NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series Cal-Steam/Kohler event at Infineon Raceway it was Morgan Lucas in Top Alcohol Dragster and Jason Rupert in Top Alcohol Funny Car leading the way.

Lucas, looking to defend his win from last year, used his qualifying run from Friday to capture the No. 1 qualifying spot at 5.295 seconds, 272.06 mph. The Indiana racer is followed by Jim Whiteley in second running 5.323, 268.54 and former NHRA Pacific Division Champion Duane Shields in third at 5.348 seconds, 272.28 mph.

Rupert used a 5.586 second, 256.75 mph pass to take over the No. 1 spot surpassing Don Hudson and Brain Hough in doing so. Rupert of Yorba Linda, Calif., will face off against Doug Gordon of Paso Robles, Calif., in round one of eliminations set for Sunday.

Hudson, of Stockton, Calif., held on to the No. 2 spot running 5.609 seconds at 255.53 and Hough settled in third at 5.610, 257.09.

Former National Champion Dean Carter of Glendale, Ariz., held on to the top spot in Comp Eliminator with a 7.112 second lap at 163.18 mph. Carter is followed by Tom Huggins in second and Napa, California, racer John Haire in the No. 6 position.

Modesto, Calif., resident Don Wann locked into the top spot in Stock Eliminator running 11.288 seconds and James Weakland out of Colorado in No. 1 in Super Stock at 9.494 second in his '68 Camaro. Ryan McClanahan is second in Stock behind Wann while Jimmy DeFrank put his DeFrank & Sons '07 Cobalt in second in Super Stock.

Leading the Sunset RaceCraft Top Sportsman class is Robert Broguiere with a lap of 6.937 seconds at 197.86 mph in his '06 GTO. The Wildomar, Calif., racer is followed by Dan Borg of San Francisco, 6.963, 201.22, and Mike Strickland of Moses Lake, Wash., in third.

Derik Milanesio and Paul Gladden are one and two in the Hughes Top Dragster category with Milanesio clocking in at 6.443 seconds, 213.43 mph and Gladden of Tracy, Calif., at 6.753 seconds, 198.85 mph.

Jerry Stinson used a 0.002 second reaction time to qualify No. 1 in the Harley Davidson Sportsman Motorcycle Series with John Widmann in second.
