BLOOMINGTON SPEEDWAY www.bloomingtonspeedway.com !!! BOBBY STINES WINS FIRST !!! HILLMAN & BOKNECHT WIN TOO
BLOOMINGTON, IN (July 8, 2006) - Another beautiful evening met Bloomington Speedway fans as they rolled into the speedway and settled in for a great night of the best racing anywhere. Each week another group of new fans discover the entertainment bargain that an evening at Bloominbton Speedway is. A couple with two small children can attend a regular weekly show at Bloomington Speedway for only $20. That's a deal that is hard to beat.
The fans on the hill were treated to a bonus last night. Bob McClure of Seymour, a former UMRA TQ midget driver and current car owner, had his TQ midget which is now driven by Kyle Lux of Shelbyville on display to give the fans an up close and personal look at the car. When Tony Stewart graduated from go karts, he drove TQ's for a couple of years. That's where he caught the attention of the car owners who eventually got him to the pinnacle of motorsports. In fact, he will often race a TQ when given the opportunity. These cars will be in competition on July 21. The fans might well see a future NASCAR or IRL star in the making.
SPRINT CARS -
Last night's sprint car program was the last chance for racers to check out the red clay of Bloomington Speedway before USAC and Indiana Sprint Week brings their show to Bloomington Speedway next Friday night. For the second time in the past few weeks Bob Gatten traveled in from Hanford, Calif. to scout out the track for the team that he owns. This time he was accompanied by his eighteen year old driver and grandson, Chad Boesfplug, as well as one of their crew guys. After watching the action, Chad commented that he wished they had been able to get their car here in time to race last night.
Last week's feature winner, Josh Cunningham, won the first feature from the pole.
In the second heat race Brady Short sliced through the field from his eighth place starting position to win the heat race.
Steve Rone won the third heat from the second row starting position; and Bobby Stines won the final heat from the third row.
Hunter Schuerenberg and Casey Shuman transferred to the feature from the first "B" feature while Arin McIntosh and Kenny Carmichael, Sr. transferred from the second heat race. The second "B" feature was quite spirited with McIntosh, Carmichael, Sr., and Jon Sciscoe all running in a pack. McIntosh eventually put a little distance between her sprinter and those of Carmichael and Sciscoe. However, Carmichael eventually edged Sciscoe for the final transfer position. McIntosh found transferring to the feature to be a great way for her to begin celebrating her 17th birthday.
In the redraw to determine the starting lineup for the feature, Brady Short drew the number one pill to start on the pole. Danny Holtsclaw started second followed by Bobby Stines, Lee Stark, Kent Christian, Steve Rone, Josh Cunningham, and Cole Whitt.
When flagman Rusty Nunn waved the green flag to start the race, Brady Short charged into the lead; however, the start was called back when Holtsclaw and McIntosh tangled as did Lee Stark and Hunter Schuerenberg. Stark and Schuerenberg were able to restart but Holtsclaw and McIntosh were done for the evening.
On the restart Short took the point; but Stines was right on his tail. On the third circuit Stines passed Short for the lead and began to check out on the field. Short, Kent Christian, and Josh Cunningham were all keeping themselves busy battling for second place. Kevin Briscoe and Dickie Gaines started ninth and tenth; and they were working their way through traffic to battle with the frontrunners.
On the 15th circuit, Briscoe passed Cunningham to take fourth place; and on the 19th lap he passed Christian to take third place. However, on the following lap Christian recaptured third place. From there to the checkered flags, it was a tremendous battle for second. Through all of this Stines maintained a comfortable lead. Short beat Christian across the line to secure a second place finish by inches. Briscoe and Cunningham rounded out the top five.
This is Stines' sixth year of competing at Bloomington Speedway; and last night's win was his first on the red clay. He was clearly elated by the results of his evening.
Tire & Wheel Center Super Stocks:
Jeremy Hines, Mike Jones, and Chris Hillman began their evenings by winning their heat races; while Ben DuBois won the "B" feature.
The redraw put Tire & Wheel Center Super Stock points leader Jeremy Hines of Seymour in sixth place to start the feature. When the green flag waved Jack Frye took the point; however, the start was called back because of a shunt involving Terry Arthur. On the second circuit, Greg Amick tangled with another car and wound up on his top. Amick was uninjured; but his car was not so fortunate and his night was over.
On the fourth circuit Chris Hillman took passed Frye to take the lead. Hillman and Frye continued to run first and second until the checkered flags flew. Points leader Jeremy Hines pulled off of the track with mechanical failure on the ninth lap. The following lap a mechanical failure on Mike Jones' mount sent him to the bottom of the track in front of several cars. A total of seven cars were eliminated from competition by this shunt including former Tire and Wheel Center super stock champion Greg Kendall. Kendall came into competition last night in second place in the points; and he stood to gain some gain some ground on Hines when Hines' car broke. However, as it turned out, he finished only two spots ahead of Hines.
Frye held on to finish second with Kevin Arthur, Joe Lucas, and Tom Ault making up the top five.
The win was Hillman's second of the season.
0'NEAL WOOD PRODUCTS MODIFIEDS -
In the O'Neal Wood Product modified division the redraw put John DeMoss and Matt Boknecht ,side by side on the front row of the feature. They were going to make it hard for anybody else to get past them. Boknecht and DeMoss traded the lead back and forth evening. When the race was over, Matt Boknecht had won his third feature of the season at Bloomington Speedway.
Brandon Short drove to a strong third place finish for his best finish of the season so far. Kent Robinson started eighth and finished fourth. Matt Bex rounded out the top five by coming from 11 th to finish fifth.
In preliminary action Shelby Miles, John DeMoss, and Ray Humphrey won the heat races.
A first lap crash in the "B" feature took out Jeff Bland, Jr., Justin Blackwell, Wendell Denton, and Shane McElhenney. Just about everyone who survived the first lap carnage would transfer to the feature event.
