NHRA LUCAS OIL DRAG RACING SERIES - PACIFIC DIVISION

            FONTANA, Calif. - More than 500 NHRA Pacific division racers
took to the quarter-mile at Auto Club Dragway at California Speedway for the
opening day of action at the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event.  The
newly re-opened dragstrip is hosting the three-day meet which is the third
of seven on the division calendar.  With one more day of qualifying and time
trials to go, officials expect nearly 600 cars to compete this weekend.

Darren Nicholson of Mission Viejo, Calif., bumped Alta Loma resident Sean
O'Bannon out of the No. 1 qualifying spot in the first round of Top Alcohol
Dragster action.  Nicholson ran 5.836 seconds at 248 mph to O'Bannon's
5.868-second, 206.64 mph effort.  

Riverside's Mark Woznichak outpaced the Top Alcohol Funny Car field with at
5.880-second, 242.80 mph pass and John Weaver of Newport Beach, Calif., is
in the No. 2 position after running 5.948 seconds at 242.80 mph.

Reigning Comp Eliminator division champion Dean Carter, Glendale, Ariz., was
the top qualifier in the class and Alta Loma's Ryan McClanahan drove his '67
Camaro to the top spot in Super Stock.  In Stock Eliminator, John Schloe,
Garden Grove, Calif., wheeled his '69 Firebird to the No. 1 qualifying spot
and McClanahan, one of many dual-class competitors, is the No. 5 qualifier
in the class.  Top Comp racer Del Cox Jr., Downey, Calif., was the best
qualifier and in Sportsman Motorcycle, Phoenix's William Wilson led the
pack.

            Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Auto Club Dragway.
Gates open at 7 a.m. both days.  Qualifying and time trials continue
Saturday at 8 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will have
two qualifying passes, at noon and 4 p.m.  Eliminations start Sunday morning
at 8.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car will run first round
at noon.

Tickets for the NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series are $20 Saturday and $20
Sunday.  Children 12 and under are admitted free.  For more information call
