AIADA’s 2006 Dealer of the Year Award Gala

PHOTO

AIADA’s 2006 Dealer of the Year recipient was not a veteran of the auto industry, but rather a new dealer civically and politically involved in every way imaginable.

AIADA’s 2006 Dealer of the Year Cheri Fleming

Cheri Fleming of Valencia Acura in Valencia, California not only sells Acuras, but  has donated $2.5 million in community organizations and also has an investment of $100,000 to help build a cardiac-cath lab and new Emergency Room at a local Hospital.

What’s more, she also has extensive experience in state, local and national fundraising, and has received special certificates of recognition from the City of Santa Clarita (2003-2004), Los Angeles County (2001 & 2004), California’s State Senate and Assembly (2002-2004), and the U.S. Congress (2003-2004) for her political involvement.

Fleming’s passion for community involvement and commitment to excellence at her dealership earned her AIADA’s 2006 Dealer of the Year Award, presented by Newsweek. Fleming was presented with the award by Patrick Haggerty, Publisher of Newsweek, at AIADA’s Dealer of the Year Awards Ceremony at the J.W. Mariott Hotel in Washington, D.C.

“I am so proud to be a car dealer,” said an astonished, but honored, Fleming. “Being a car dealer affords me the opportunity to be involved in so many wonderful causes, and to truly make a difference in our community.”

The finalists for AIADA’s 2006 Dealer of the Year are joined by AIADA Chairman Don Hicks and Newsweek U.S. Publisher Patrick Haggerty

In addition to AIADA’s Dealer of the Year Program, Monday night of Auto Congress included speeches by some of the major policy players in Washington. U.S. Deputy Trade Representative Karan Bhatia addressed the audience on one of the most important issues affecting international auto dealers today: the U.S.-Thailand Free Trade agreement. Political problems have caused talks to be delayed for the moment. However, according to Bhatia, “we are hopeful that the talks can resume in the fall. We seek these FTAs because they help to expand economic freedom for our country and solidify liberal economic relationships.” said Bhatia.

Following Fleming’s feel-good acceptance speech, Chris Matthews of Hardball on MSNBC and The Chris Matthews Show on NBC gave the audience many laughs while talking about the current political scene in Washington as well as prospects for the 2008 Presidential election.

”The thought of Bill Clinton not having a job and living at the White House is a scary thing,” said Matthews.

Matthews went on to quip about the current political scene and the figures involved. He gave Republicans a “one to four” chance of maintaining majority in the House.
