FORD RACING NOTES AND QUOTES Subway Fresh 500 Advance

April 20, 2006 Phoenix International Raceway

Greg Biffle, driver of the No. 16 National Guard Fusion, has led six of the first seven events this season – including a race-high 168 laps at California and a race-high 128 laps at Atlanta, but does not have a victory and only two top-10 finishes to show for his efforts. He led 49 of the first 64 laps at Texas before a wreck ended his day. Biffle heads into Saturday night’s race in 23rd place in the standings.

GREG BIFFLE – No. 16 National Guard Fusion – YOU’VE HAD UPS AND DOWNS SO FAR THIS SEASON. OVERALL, WHAT IS YOUR MOOD AND WHAT IS THE TEAM’S MOOD? “It’s really pretty good, because everywhere we’ve been we’ve run well. We ran well at Martinsville, you know, and I made a mistake and got us in trouble. We’ve run at California. We’ve run well at California. We’ve run well at Texas. We’ve run well everywhere. So, our cars are fast, we’re doing things right on pit road, we’re calling the race like we need to, we feel like we’re doing everything right. So, we know a few things have happened. We focused on our what our few mistakes have been and try not to make those mistakes and try and be better about ourselves and what we’re doing. I think we’re going to be okay. We’re on track, we just need to get to the end of the race. We’ve had this trouble before in the past, and we know what to do.” RACING LUCK, IT SEEMS, IS ALWAYS BAD. IN OTHER SPORTS, SOMETIMES, A PLAY THAT’S NOT PERFECT CAN STILL WORK. IS THERE ANYTHING LIKE THAT IN RACING, WHERE, PERHAPS, YOU GET MORE THAN WHAT YOU PROBABLY DESERVE, AND DOES THAT HELP BALANCE OUT SOME OF THE BAD LUCK? “I think so. Sometimes you get in lucky spots, and cautions fall just right. I had that happen for me at Bristol. I was three laps down and the cautions fell right. We never got the lucky dog one time. Got all three of our laps back – earned ’em. Tony Stewart was in my mirror, because I took two tires, in the 70-lap run Tony is in my mirror and the caution comes out, and I got that lap back. So things have worked both ways for us this season. We finished seventh there with a bent-up race car. We hit the wall hard, knocked the toe out of the camber and everything, and finished seventh. Shoot, luck was on our side for sure.” DOES THE SHAKEUP OF THE OTHER CREW CHIEFS AT ROUSH AFFECT YOU AT ALL? “Not at all.” DID YOU BOUNCE STUFF OFF OF JIMMY FENNIG AT ALL? “Yeah, we did. Losing Jimmy is going to be a little bit of a distraction, probably for all the teams because he’s been here a long time and he has a lot of information. I think that we’re going to be fine. I don’t think it’s going to affect our team any. The drivers are going to be doing what they’re doing and the cars are going to feel like this, we’re going to talk about it and we’re going to go on. If anything, it’s going to affect those guys for a week or two, and a lot of times what we’ve seen is they bring a new guy in and all of a sudden it sparks a little fire in the team and they run well for three or four races. So it could work both ways.” HAVE YOU TALKED TO KURT BUSCH AT ALL? “No, I haven’t. He left me a message Monday after the race. Just letting it cool down a little bit, just letting it die.” HAVE YOU TOLD NICOLE NOT TO GET MORE PRESS THAN YOU ANYMORE? “Yeah. She was just upset about it and really felt like Kurt was going to end up hurting somebody, and that’s what she conveyed to Eva, that ‘hey, you got to talk to him, you know, three weeks in a row,’ and that was really her concern. She was mad at Eva one bit. They’re friends and they talked and they do stuff. It was a matter of the safety for everyone was really the concern, and that was it. It certainly got way out of proportion because there wasn’t any big news that week. Nobody got out of the car and shoved somebody. It was kind of an uneventful weekend in sports, together, so it was a highlight. She didn’t want it to be and we didn’t want it to be, and I think it’s over.”

GREG BIFFLE, continued – DO YOU THINK THAT THE RECENT CHANGES AT ROUSH BE HELPFUL TO THE 16 TEAM? “I don’t really think it’s going to affect the 16 team, but maybe it will get those other guys energized and running better. And, sometimes changing guys around sparks a little fire and they’ll run well for two or three weeks, or it may take them two or three weeks to get to know each other. So, it may work either way. We’ll just have to wait and see. We’re anxious to see what the changes will do.” GETTING BACK TO RACING LUCK, OVER THE COURSE OF THE SEASON DOES IT ALL EVEN UP SO EVERYBODY ENDS UP PRETTY MUCH WHERE THEY SHOULD END UP? “Yeah, I think so. Certainly, you don’t wish any bad luck on any of your competitors, but, like the 48 had bad luck at Bristol, and eventually we’re all going to be in that situation at some point or another. It’s unfortunate, but we will. That’s what balances out the points. And when somebody doesn’t, like Matt Kenseth a few years ago gets a big lead. We’ve seen that as well. So, sometimes teams will avoid all that. You just never know. It does work in a cycle, for sure.” WITH THAT IN MIND, THIS TEAM IS IN 23RD PLACE AFTER SEVEN RACES. WHEN DO YOU START THINKING THAT THIS HAS GOT TO START TURNING AROUND AND YOU CAN START MAKING UP SOME GROUND? “We’re talking about that now, and we were talking about that at Texas. We felt like that was going to be our day to get ourselves back into 15th in points, maybe 14th, and really gain on the leaders, and unfortunately we didn’t, by in a big way. We think we can do it here. We think we can come here and run in the top five, and that’s what we need to do. We need to focus on that, and we feel like we can do that.”
