TORRENCE PUTS ANOTHER NOTCH IN HIS TOP ALCOHOL DRAGSTER BELT WITH A WIN AT
THE TEXAS MOTORPLEX

ENNIS, Texas - In the NHRA South Central Division's final Lucas
Oil Drag Racing Series event of 2005, Steve Torrence continued his reign of
terror over his Top Alcohol Dragster competition with another win. Top
Alcohol Funny Car driver Steve Gasparrelli kept his hopes alive for a
national title by taking his second win of the year. Phoenix's Jim Hughes
scored two trophies, winning in Super Comp and Super Gas.

Torrence, a 22-year-old rookie Top Alcohol Dragster driver out
of Kilgore, Texas, has already clinched both the national and South Central
Division titles in the class so his fifth divisional event win of the season
was icing on the cake. Torrence started his first race in the class in May
in Rusk, Texas. He was runner-up at that race and, except for a first-round
loss in Joliet, Ill., he won every other divisional event he attended. In
the final-round at the Motorplex, Torrence beat former division champ Lee
Callaway of Channelview, Texas. Torrence ran 5.315 seconds at 267.27 mph to
Callaway's 5.445-second, 260.01 mph effort.

Gasparrelli, a former Pacific Division titlist from West Covina,
Calif., beat Cleburne, Texas, racer Jimmy Jones in the final. Gasparrelli
bested Jones with a 5.711-second, 256.65 mph run over Jones' 5.783-second,
250.37 mph pass.

In Comp Eliminator, Jeff Taylor, Lumberton, N.C., took the win
over Daniel Mikel of Hempsted, Texas. Super Stocker William McLemore, S.
Houston, Texas, beat Dominic Camera of Tustin, Calif., in the final and
joined Pittsgrove, N.J., Stock Eliminator racer Lee Zane in the winner's
circle. Brian Hughes, Hughes Springs, Texas, took the win in Super Street
and Phillip Muse, Tomball, Texas, won in Top Sportsman. The Top Dragster
winner was Wayne Baker of San Antonio, Texas, and the Sportsman Motorcycle
winner was Bruce Calhoun of Hope, Ark.

This was the last NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event on the
South Central Division's calendar. Racers can still earn points toward
divisional and national titles at out-of-division races.
