Southeast Division Summit Series finals underway at South Ga.
Motorsports Park


            CECIL, Ga. - More than 600 of the top racers, representing
NHRA's Southeast division, took to the track today for the opening day
of time trials at the NHRA Southeast Division Summit Racing Series
Finals being held this weekend at South Georgia Motorsports Park. The
race, which begins today, will conclude Saturday, October 15.  

Racers at the event this weekend will compete for individual honors in
five racing categories as well as for a team championship. A total of 20
member tracks are expected to complete for team honors this weekend.
The coveted team championship was won last year by the Montgomery, Ala.,
based team from Montgomery Motorsports Park. 

            Friday morning, racers will once again suit up for a round
of time trials. Friday afternoon, the top racers from each track in
Super Pro, Sportsman, Motorcycle and High School will compete in the
annual Race of Champions.   

On Saturday, individual championships in Super Pro, Pro, Sportsman and
Motorcycle will be crowned. The winners in those four categories will
qualify for the NHRA Summit Racing Series National Finals to be held
during the Automobile Club of Southern California NHRA Finals November
3-6 at Pomona Raceway in Pomona, Calif. In Pomona, the Southeast
Division champs will join champions from NHRA's six other geographic
regions to compete for national championships. The winners of the Pomona
event will also receive a $5,000 bonus.   

Gates will open Friday at 8 a.m. and 7 a.m. on Saturday. Tomorrow, time
trials begin at 9 a.m., with eliminations for the Race of Champions set
to begin in the afternoon. Saturday, eliminations in all categories
begin at 8 a.m.
