JOHNSON, HOUGH LEAD QUALIFIERS AT CHAMPION RACEWAY'S LUCAS OIL SERIES EVENT

            EAGLE POINT, Ore. - In the first rounds of qualifying at
Champion Raceway's NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event, Brandon Johnson
leads the Top Alcohol Dragster class and Brian Hough leads in Top Alcohol
Funny Car.  This is the last of seven events on the NHRA Northwest Division
schedule and is the final opportunity for drivers to earn valuable
home-division points toward divisional and national championships.

Johnson, a former division champ from Shelton, Wash., qualified with a
5.461-second pass at 256.87 mph to take the top position.  Only a fraction
of a second separates Johnson from No. 2 qualifier, Mike Austin of Medford,
who ran 5.467 seconds at 263.15 mph.

Junction City, Ore., racer Hough has a bigger cushion between himself and
the second-place qualifier, Hank Coolidge of Sunburst, Mont.  Hough, also a
former division titlist, set the pace at 5.858 seconds at 247.22 mph while
Coolidge made a 5.975-second, 240.52 mph run.

Top qualifiers in other classes are Michael Stone, Tulare, Calif., in Comp
Eliminator; Steve Wann, Modesto, Calif., in Super Stock; Tommy Gaynor,
Vancouver, Wash., in Stock Eliminator; Brett Dresen, Brookings, Ore., in Top
Comp; and Brett Hordemann, Spokane, Wash., in Sportsman Motorcycle.  Klamath
Falls Top Alcohol Funny Car racer Clint Thompson is the No. 5 qualifier and
Medford's Mark Stewart is the sixth qualifier in Comp Eliminator.  Norman
Scott of Grants Pass and Terry Sherrill of Klamath Falls are the third- and
seventh-place qualifiers, respectively, in Super Stock and Jerry Stinson of
Medford is the No. 10 qualifier in Sportsman Motorcycle.

            Racing continues for a final day, Saturday at Champion Raceway.
Gates open at 8 a.m. and final qualifying and time trials are scheduled from
10 a.m. to 1 p.m.  Eliminations will start at 1 p.m.  

Although Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car were slated finish
qualifying on Friday night, on-track delays and cold weather forced a
shuffle to the schedule.  The will each get a final qualifying pass at 10
a.m. Saturday and run first round at 3 p.m.  A Jet Car exhibition will
punctuate the evening's action.

Tickets are $15.  Children 6 to 12 years old are $5 and kids 5 and under are
admitted free.  Champion Raceway is located at the Jackson County Speed
