FIELDS SET FOR SUNDAY ELIMINATIONS AT CALIFORNIA DRAGWAY'S NHRA LUCAS
OIL DRAG RACING SERIES EVENT

            FONTANA, Calif. - After three days of qualifying at the
Pacific Division NHRA Lucas Oil Drag Racing Series event at California
Dragway, competitors are set to run eliminations Sunday morning.  More
than 450 racers in 10 classes took to the quarter-mile dragstrip on the
grounds of California Speedway fighting for qualifying slots for
Sunday's eliminations.

In Top Alcohol Dragster, Mike Austin, the top qualifier in the opening
round, stayed in the No. 1 spot.  The Medford, Ore., racer's
5.490-second, 260.46 mph effort was an improvement over his initial
5.537-second run.  Boulder City, Nev., driver Duane Shields also
improved today with a 5.633-second, 246.93 mph pass.  Shields jumped
from the No. 4 slot to No. 2.

Defending Pacific Division Top Alcohol Funny Car champion Doug Gordon of
Paso Robles, Calif., moved up from the No. 2 place to take over the top
spot with at 5.794-second run at 250.51 mph.  Bret Williamson of
Campbell, Calif., also improved, moving from fourth place to second,
running 5.809 seconds at 243.06 mph.  Friday's No.1 Top Alcohol Funny
Car qualifier Steve Gasparrelli of San Dimas, Calif., slipped to third.

Ontario's John Mihovetz remained No. 1 in Comp Eliminator and Chuck
Rayburn of Castro Valley, Calif., also kept his top qualifying spot in
Super Stock.  Frank Grossi of Upland is the second-place qualifier in
Super Stock.  Modesto, Calif., racer Don Wann set the pace in Stock
Eliminator while Riverside racer Brad Pierce is No. 3.  Joe Roubicek of
West Lake Village, Calif., kept the No. 1 place in Top Comp and Ronald
Weems of Riverside is in the fourth position.

Eliminations continue Sunday California Dragway at 9 a.m.  Gates open at
8 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car run first round
at noon.  

Tickets are $20 and children 12 and under are admitted free with a paid
adult.  Each ticket includes a pit pass and parking.  California Dragway
