The inaugural Jeg’s NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals is underway at National
Trail Raceway in Columbus, Ohio. Nearly 600 competitors are expected to
participate in the event, which began this morning and continues through Sunday,
July 31.

In early qualifying action, Allyn Armstrong, Brian Oakes, and Keith Lynch
are the provisional leaders in Comp, Super Stock, and Stock, respectively.

Armstrong, of Kingston, N.S., drove his L/A Opel GT to a run of
9.106-seconds to pace the 32-car Comp field. Comp racers will participate in their
first-ever class eliminations run-offs tomorrow afternoon.

Oakes, who resides in DeBary, Fla., leads the Super Stock field with a 9.386
behind the wheel of his SS/DS ’69 Chevy Camaro. Super Stock racers will get
two more qualifying runs on Friday and will participate in class eliminations
on Saturday, setting the field for Sunday’s final eliminations.

Former two-time NHRA World Champion Lynch, of Mt. Ayr, Iowa is the early
leader in Stock with a run of 10.423-seconds in his ’70 Camaro. Stock drivers
will also receive two more qualifying runs tomorrow, and will take part in class

Team Jeg’s Members John, Troy and Mike Coughlin are participating in the Jeg’
s Northern SPORTSnationals. John is driving in Super Stock and Super Comp.
He is currently qualified third in Super Stock. Troy is also doing double duty
by driving his Jeg’s Mustang in the AMS Staff Leasing/TLR Pro Mod series and

SPORTSnationals earlier this year in Belle Rose, La., is racing in Super
Comp.

Not all of the festivities took place on-track Thursday. At the conclusion
of qualifying, event sponsor Jeg’s Mail Order hosted a free racer appreciation
picnic featuring a barbecue, live band, and other fun and games including a
dunk tank where racers were able to submerge NHRA Northeast, Southeast, and
North Central Division Directors Bob Lang, Bill Holt, and Jay Hullinger.

Racing at the inaugural Jeg’s NHRA Northern SPORTSnationals will continue
Friday.
