McClenathan drops close race to Bernstein
KENT, Wash. (July 24, 2005) - It was an early exit for Cory McClenathan
as Brandon Bernstein raced to the first round win light at the 18th
annual NHRA CARQUEST Auto Parts Nationals.
McClenathan made a drag race of it as his Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM
AirHog Top Fuel dragster covered the Pacific Raceways quarter-mile in
4.628 seconds to 4.591 seconds for Bernstein.
"Todd (Smith, crew chief) and the guys did a good job," said
McClenathan. "They made all the right calls. The car went down the
track without any apparent problems. Brandon (Bernstein) just out ran us."
"This FRAM dragster is a brand new car. We're still trying to learn its
characteristics. Each car is a little bit different, even if they're
built side by side. We're trying to find out what our car wants.
Missing Friday night's run and the data we would have gathered certainly
didn't help us.
"These first round losses are killing us points wise. We'll have to go
into Sonoma, our sponsors' race, and try to do the best we can. We want
to go all out for FRAM, Autolite, Prestone and Bendix next weekend."
Unofficially, following this event, McClenathan is No. 9 in the NHRA
POWERade Top Fuel point standings. He now has accumulated 686 points.
NEXT RACE: After two of three consecutive events on three consecutive
weekends, Cory McClenathan and the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog Top
Fuel dragster now move to Sonoma, Calif. Next up is the FRAM Autolite
Nationals at Infineon Raceway, July 29-31.
TELEVISION: ESPN2 HD will air three hours of same-day television
