NHRA Kurt Johnson Update: Career-Best Numbers Power KJ to Second Starting Spot in Seattle

Event: 18th Annual Carquest Auto Parts Nationals

Day/Date: Saturday, July 23, 2005

Location: Pacific Raceways, Kent, WA

The second day of qualifying for the Carquest Auto Parts Nationals
provided its share of drama, as the improved conditions on Saturday
morning translated into record runs by many in the Pro Stock category.
Kurt Johnson continued to be one of the most consistent and quick cars
among the "factory hot rods", with his best pass of 6.665 seconds at a
top speed of 207.15 mph not only slotting the ACDelco Cobalt in the
second position, but also established new personal bests in elapsed time
and top speed.

"Overall, I'd have to say we're pretty happy with our performance in
qualifying. Certainly, I'd like to be No. 1, but it just didn't happen.
However, we're confident that we have something we can work with on race
day. Our ACDelco Cobalt seems to be very consistent, and if we can run
6.60's all day tomorrow or even low .70s if the track gets a little
hotter, we should be in the thick of it.

"It did try to go to the right a little bit and spun the tires on that
last run, but I think we have a handle on what we need to do to fix it.
We'll take tomorrow one round at a time, and see what we can do. After
all, we've won in Seattle every six years, so we should be right on
schedule for another."
