McClenathan in at No. 6 in FRAM AirHog dragster
MORRISON, Colo. (July 16, 2005) - After four rounds of qualifying at the
26th annual NHRA Mopar Mile-High Nationals, Cory McClenathan, driver of
the Carrier Boyz Racing FRAM AirHog Top Fuel dragster, enters tomorrow's
eliminations No. 6 on the final qualifying ladder.
McClenathan covered the Bandimere Speedway quarter mile in 4.682
seconds. He will face John Smith, who qualified No. 11 with a pass of
4.900 seconds, in the opening round tomorrow. The pair has not met this
season, with McClenathan winning eight times in ten match ups during
their respective careers.
"For a brand new car, I feel pretty good about qualifying," said
McClenathan. "It's hard to run up here on the hill. My crew chief Todd
Smith has been doing a good job this weekend of adjusting to the
altitude and getting the car from A to B.
"That last run (4.747 seconds) was a good pass in the heat. Just as we
did in the qualifying sessions, we need to approach eliminations one
round at a time. Prepare ourselves for the first round and if we get by
that one, then, and only then, should we think about the second round
and try to run a little better. And so on through each rounds. That's
all we can do at this point."
The Mopar Mile-High Nationals leads off the first of three consecutive
events - Denver, Seattle and Sonoma, Calif. - on three consecutive
weekends, which among the drag racing community is known as the "Western
Swing."
In 12 previous events here at Bandimere Speedway, he has two wins, a
runner-up and has advanced to the semifinals three other times. He
defeated Tony Schumacher in 1997 and followed that up with a win over
Joe Amato the following year. In 2002, he was runner-up to Darrell Russell.
ELIMINATIONS: McClenathan begins his quest for the Top Fuel title on
Sunday with eliminations for all classes getting underway at 12 noon.
