TORRENCE, MANZO LEAD QUALIFIERS AT ROUTE 66 RACEWAY'S LUCAS OIL SERIES RACE

            JOLIET, Ill. - In the first rounds of qualifying at the
Chicagoland Dodge Dealers NHRA Division 3 Race, a round of the NHRA Lucas
Oil Drag Racing Series, Top Alcohol Dragster driver Steve Torrence and Top
Alcohol Funny Car pilot Frank Manzo took the No. 1 qualifying positions in
their classes. 

Kilgore, Texas, racer Torrence set the pace for the 23 Top Alcohol Dragster
competitors with a 5.394-second, 257.43 mph pass.  The defending North
Central Division champion, Bill Reichert of Owosso, Mich., is in second
place  with a 5.478-second, 263.92 mph effort.  Reichert is also the
defending event champ in the class.

            Manzo is a veteran driver out of Morganville, N.J.  He ran 5.805
seconds at 251.44 mph to put him just ahead of Vern Moats of Des Moines,
Iowa.  Moats ran 5.819 seconds at 250.92 mph.  Manzo and Moats are tied for
the most division crowns with 15.

Top qualifiers in other classes were Bob Book, Frankfort, Ill., in Comp
Eliminator; John Coughlin, Delaware, Ohio, in Super Stock; Brent Darroch,
Monaca, Pa., in Stock Eliminator; and Ryan Hargett, Evansville, Ind., in Top
Sportsman. 

Racing continues Saturday and Sunday at Route 66 Raceway.  Gates open at 7
a.m. both days.  

Final qualifying and time trials will begin Saturday at 9 a.m.  Top
Sportsman will run at 4 and 7:30 p.m. and Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top
Alcohol Funny Cars are slated to run at 5 and 8 p.m.  A fireworks show is
scheduled at 10 p.m.  

Eliminations start Sunday at 8 a.m.  Top Alcohol Dragsters and Top Alcohol
Funny Cars run first round of eliminations at 1 p.m.

Tickets are $19 Saturday and $21 Sunday.  A two-day pass is $32 (prices
include City of Joliet Head Tax of $1).  Children 12 and under are admitted
