FIELDS SET FOR SUNDAY ELIMINATIONS AT PACIFIC DIVISION LUCAS OIL EVENT
SONOMA, Calif. - Qualifying is complete at Infineon Raceway's
Team Superstores NHRA Summer Nationals event, a round of the NHRA Lucas Oil
Drag Racing Series. The race is the fourth of seven on the Pacific Division
schedule. In today's action, Doug Gordon held on to his No. 1 qualifying
spot in Top Alcohol Funny Car while Top Alcohol Dragster rookie Aaron
Olivarez of Sandy, Utah, took over the top spot from Las Vegas' Duane
Shields.
Gordon, of Paso Robles, Calif., improved on Friday's run by a full tenth of
a second, running 5.653 seconds at 253.18 mph. Newport Beach, Calif., racer
John Weaver is in the second spot with a 5.667-second, 255.97 mph effort.
Olivarez made a 5.319-second, 268.01 mph pass to put him ahead of Eric
Morris of Sanger, Calif. Sanger ran 5.398 seconds at 263.92 mph. Shields
failed to improve on Friday's numbers in either of today's qualifying
sessions and dropped to the No. 5 qualifying spot.
There were a total of 21 Top Alcohol Dragsters and 17 Top Alcohol Funny Cars
vying for eight qualifying spots in each class.
J.D. Zink of Chico, Calif., set the pace in Comp Eliminator. In
the other qualifying classes all of Friday's No. 1 qualifiers retained their
positions. In Super Stock, Harry Holton, Modesto, Calif., is No. 1 as is
Don Wann, another Modesto resident, in Stock Eliminator. Paul Gladden of
Tracy, Calif., was the best qualifier in Top Comp.
Racing continues Sunday at 8:15 a.m. Gates open at 7 a.m. Top Alcohol
Dragster and Top Alcohol Funny Car run first round of eliminations at noon.
Tickets are $20 for adults and children 12 and under are admitted free. For
