KJ Powers to the No. 1 position in Englishtown on Friday
Event: 36th Annual NHRA SuperNationals
Day/Date: Friday, June 17, 2005
Location: Old Bridge Township Raceway Park, Englishtown, New Jersey
Kurt Johnson opened his qualifying effort at the NHRA SuperNationals in
impressive fashion on Friday, posting two of the quickest and fastest
runs of the day in the Pro Stock category. After starting with a solid
6.738-second, 205.22 mph pass, KJ blistered the Raceway Park
quarter-mile in the evening run, tripping the finish line timers in
6.675 seconds with a top speed of 206.10 mph, capturing the No. 1
position heading into Saturday's final two sessions.
"We felt going into tonight's session that the track would hold a .60.
They had sprayed it four times, and the track temperature went down
10-12 degrees. It was all a matter of getting the car hooked up to the
racetrack, and we did.
"It was nice to make that run. There's a difference between thinking or
knowing you can do something and actually doing it, which is what we did
today.
"The one thing that we have learned in the short time that we have had
this ACDelco Cobalt is that if it goes straight, it goes quick, and
tonight it did. That will be our key this weekend, making sure that it
goes straight on every run. If it does that, we feel we can get to the
winner's circle."
